Mech-Dickel Robotics is a big fan of the Johnny 5 robot, acting as his ideal model for robot designing. Johnny 5 robot has a friendly head, functional arms and hands, and tank tracks as a method of locomotion. As a fan, Mech-Dickel developed several similar projects, and with each iteration, they became bigger, stronger, with more functions and possibilities, and improved his creative skills. This robot has an Arduino Mega 2560 to control all 13 servo motors. Also connected to the Arduino is an H-bridge (L298N) to control the grippers (hands) and another H-bridge (VNH2SP30) to control the tank tracks DC motors (locomotion). There is one more Arduino (Nano) inside the head, which controls the LED matrices. At the bottom of the head is a Wi-Fi camera to stream images to a smartphone. This camera was taken from a Syma X5SW-1 quadcopter. Therefore, this project can be called a sequel to a lineage of robots inspired by Johnny 5.

This system holds a ball in balance on a plate. A webcam films the system and a python program analyzes the images to find the position of the ball. The python program calculates the tilting of the tray to prevent the ball from falling.
A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) regulator is used to compensate the movements of the ball. The position and speed of the ball are measured by the camera and these measurements are used by the PID regulator in the python program.

The PIDDYBOT is a small Open Source balancing robot with the aim of teaching PID controls using a "hands on" concept. Anyone can play with the PIDDYBOT and start to develop an understanding of what the P, I, and D terms within the PID loop do, even if that person has no concept of the math behind the control itself. It is a great teaching tool for the classroom. The program Sean has written for the PIDDYBOT uses the potentiometers to physically control the PID terms. This way the maker can turn them in real time and see the effect they have on the control parameters. The PIDDYBOT can also be programmed with more complex programs as well. There are encoders for the wheels to add more stability, and if you like you can add Bluetooth for remote monitoring.
